Greg Myhras passionate interest in photography began as a teenager growing up in his native San Francisco in the 70s. A chance encounter with a photo journalist at a drag race forged his choice of career. "I had hopped the fence at the end of the track and was shooting pictures with my trusty Instamatic and struck up a conversation with a pro photographer. He let me look through his camera, with its long telephoto lens, and I was instantly hooked. I was about 14, and at that point I knew exactly what I wanted to be. I ended up owning a 35mm camera before I could drive."
He is a self-taught photographer who opted for a more personalized education in lieu of formal training. Initially intrigued with photo journalism, Greg worked through his late teens by shooting everything from rock concerts to auto races. To learn production skills, Greg apprenticed at, and then managed, a pre-press job shop - learning what was required to get his photography to look its best in print. This background in pre-press graphics gave Greg a draftsman's eye and a keen sense of tone.
A commercial and advertising photographer by vocation, Greg has a natural and instinctive approach to producing both his commercial and personal work. Inherent in Gregs work is his love and appreciation of the arts, primarily architectural, graphic and industrial design. These inspirations and traits are invaluable resources in completing Gregs commissions, making sure to place his clients in their best possible light. Alternately, in his personal work he is drawn to objects and places that convey a sense of mystery and solitude. Many images have a haunting quality, resonating with heavy use and age. Photography Noir. Says Greg, "I appear to be hard wired to hold equal fascination for say, the flowing sheet metal on a classic car and the scabby appearance of ghosted lettering on the side of a freight car."
